A Clinical Evaluation of Tenoxicam(Tilcotil) in Osteoarthritis



Abstract
Several drugs, such as sa1icylates and NSAID, have been employed in the treatment osteoarthritis effectively decrease joint pain and increase mobility. Tenoxicam(Tilcotil), a thioenothiazine derivatives, is a newly developed NSAID with rapid analgesics and strong antiinflammatory properties.
The authors performed a clinical study to evaluate the efficacy, tolerance and safty of tenoxiam in 40 cases of osteoarthritis during 9 months from June 1988 to Mar. 1989. Medication lasted 4 weeks by equivalent once daily dosage 20 mg.
The following parameters were investigated ; global assessment, pain on moving, pain at night, stiffness, duration of stiffness and side effects.
The results were obtained as follow,
1. Out of 40 cases, 19 cases were female, 11 were male and the mean age was 58 years.
2. Mean duration of the osteoarthritis was 5 years.
3. Markedly improed result was obtained in global assessment, pain on moving, pain at night, and stiffness. Shortened duration of stiffness was observed.
4. Among 40 cases, 6 cases experienced side effects. 3 cases out of
6 cases were mild puffy face, 2 cases were abdominal discomfort and the remain one cases was skin rash with itching sensation and puffy face who had to be discontinued medication.
5. No significant difference beween pre and postmedication laboratory
values were obtained.
6. According to above results, the authors that tenoxicam is an effective and safe drug for the treatment osteoarthritis.
